People with low self-esteem tend to feel inferior to others and see their own actions in the worst possible light.
People with low self-esteem also tend not to take compliments very well. If you pride them on an accomplishment, they may write off your compliment saying “it wasn’t all that hard” or “I don’t deserve all the credit”. They may become uncomfortable when praised and have a hard time believing anything kind you say about them. Some people with low-self esteem may even believe you’re lying to them when you compliment them.
Finally, people with low self-esteem are likely to become easily ashamed or embarrassed, and are often ultra-sensitive to the negative or disapproving reactions of others. Oftentimes these people will think others are disapproving when this isn’t even close to the truth.
To be clear, people with low self-esteem are often very kind, sweet, caring individuals with a lot of love to give, but find it difficult to love themselves. They often suffer from unloving parental relationships or extremely high parental expectations that have caused them to devalue themselves in adolescence and adulthood. It can be hard to interact with these people when they recoil at signs of kindness and love, but it’s still important to treat them with love and affection as they grow on their own paths towards self-respect and confidence.
